FAQs
Is there a charge for the drive?
No, drives are free of charge.
Can I bring my walker?
Yes, just let us know to make sure the driver will have room.
Do you take wheelchairs?
No, we cannot accommodate wheelchairs, but a Cancer Agency volunteer can bring one to the car if needed once you get there.
Can someone come with me?
Yes, no problem, just let us know. Sometimes we car pool if clients live near each other and appointment times are close.
What is required to be eligible for rides?
You need to be receiving active cancer treatment, and have no other way to get to your appointment.
How far in advance do I need to call to request a ride?
Preferably 48 hours notice, but at least 24 hours.
What are your hours of operation?
We work 8:30-4:30 Monday to Friday. We answer the phone between 9-4. If there’s no answer, please leave a message and we’ll call you back. We are closed at week-ends and Statutory Holidays, so we need your appointment time for Monday by Friday.
Please ask the Cancer Agency for your appointment times for the whole week.
What if I need help getting in or out or the car?
Our drivers are not trained to give physical assistance, but you may bring someone to help you.
Do I need to call you with my appointment times?
Yes, that’s the only way we will know.
Does the Cancer Agency let you know about my appointment times?
No. We only know what you tell us-please let us know of any cancellations or changes to your appointment times.
Where can the driver take me?
To any medical appointment related to your cancer treatment. It most probably will be to the Cancer Agency, but may also be for lab work, to a hospital for a test, treatment or for surgery, or to a specialist’s office.
What about for follow-up once my treatment is completed?
Yes, we give rides to follow-up appointments.
How will I be notified if I have a ride?
The dispatchers set up the drives in the morning for the following day. In the afternoon of the day prior to your appointment, you will get a call notifying you of who your driver is, and what time you will be picked up.
What if I'm not home to get the call about my ride?
If there is no answer, we will leave a message. You need to provide a local phone number.
What if I don't have voicemail?
If we cannot leave you a message, you will need to call us the afternoon before your appointment in order to know what time you’ll be picked up and by whom.
How can I make a donation to support this great service? Can I give it to my driver?
Yes, you can give your donation to the driver. However, the best way is to send a cheque or money order to our address made out to Cancer DriveLine Society or donate online using the Donate button on the Home page.
